Clay County Health Department Now Enrolling Families for Becoming a Mom® Prenatal Education Classes

The Clay County Health Department is now accepting registrations for its Becoming a Mom® prenatal education program for families expecting babies due in December 2026, January 2027, February 2027, and March 2027.

Becoming a Mom® is a free, evidence-based, six-session prenatal education program offered through the Clay County Health Department's Maternal and Child Health Program. Designed to educate, support, and prepare expectant parents for pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, and the postpartum transition, the program provides practical information, hands-on learning, and connections to local resources. Whether families are expecting their first baby or adding to their family, every pregnancy brings unique experiences, questions, and challenges. Becoming a Mom® also offers participants the opportunity to build lasting relationships with other parents who are welcoming babies around the same time, helping families gain the knowledge, confidence, and support needed to give their new baby the healthiest possible start.

Classes are taught by Nikki Burwell, RN, Maternal Child Health Coordinator and Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, and combine expert instruction with hands-on activities and guest speakers. Topics include healthy pregnancy, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, newborn care, infant soothing techniques, safe sleep, postpartum recovery, maternal mental health, and community resources available to growing families. Guest presenters include local healthcare professionals who share their expertise and answer questions throughout the series.

All classes are held in the Clay County Health Department Meeting Room @ 820 Spellman Circle, Clay Center KS.

Participants earn points by attending each class and are rewarded throughout the series with educational materials and special incentives. The program concludes with a graduation baby shower where participants can redeem their earned points for baby essentials such as diapers, wipes, diaper bags, Pack 'n Plays, strollers, and many other items to help families prepare for their new arrival.

Enrollment is limited to 10 families per class series, and early registration is encouraged.
